About GECCo

GECCo is neither a who nor a what, it is merely a way of connecting those who are involved in emergency care and interested in global health. Anyone who has the time and the interest to grow this collaborative is welcome to bring along their skills, ideas and enthusiasm.

How did GECCo Start?

GECCo started life as a collection of ideas and conversations that grew between individuals working in UK emergency care over a number of years. A critical mass of interested persons who were working in emergency care steadily accumulated, especially in the North West and Yorkshire & Humber regions of the UK. These were people who had an experience of, or interest in, global health. Common themes emerged including similar experience of postgraduate study in global health, international and UK-based global health work, shared research interests and ideas around policy and health systems development. In October 2019, a decision was made to bring these people, ideas and conversations together around a table.

We all recognised that there was a gap to be filled when it comes to providing a platform and space for UK emergency care and global health to co-exist. Our hope was that bringing ourselves together and inviting others to join us would facilitate an open forum for collaboration and ultimately build strength in numbers. As we expand, although our roots in the north of England remain strong, there have been no limits to growing strong foundations elsewhere, especially with our colleagues from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine’s Global Emergency Medicine committee.

Our mission statement

  • The Global Emergency Care Collaborative (GECCo) is a multi-disciplinary collaboration of professionals involved in emergency care with a shared interest in global health.
  • Our aim is to facilitate a dual interest in global health and emergency care by working with, and alongside, like-minded organisations and individuals by creating a platform to connect with them.
  • We advocate for sustainable and responsible engagement in global health, underpinned by values of diversity, equity and inclusivity.
  • Within emergency care, we will aim to represent opportunities to positively impact global health through research, education, policy, career opportunities, clinical practice and systems development.
  • As a collaborative, our objective is to continually listen, reflect and evolve to meet the needs of those who wish to pursue an interest in both emergency care and global health.
  • We recognise that our work is a small part of a much larger drive to achieve sustainable and equitable good health for all.
